Why does attending to the heart matter so much? Why attending to the heart matters so much - because repentance matters so much. Growth in godliness matters so much. How will we grow to be more like Christ if we are not changing into his character?

And that involves both identifying and then repenting of attitudes of the heart.

What magic button would you want the Lord to press in the middle of this circumstance? That just gets at some of those desires that might be sitting underneath the surface? Or, you know, what's your worst case scenario in this situation? Like, what's the worst thing that could happen or the best thing?

One of the key characteristics we bring into these conversations is humility, not to make assumptions that I understand. And I think humility can, you know, can deliver us from so many pitfalls in these conversations.

I think music and singing is particularly important when our hearts are going astray because sometimes we don't feel full of praise to God, and sometimes we feel that God's character is at odds with our circumstances. It never is, but we do sometimes feel that. And singing, like saying words of liturgy, gives us words of truth to orient and coach our hearts.

When we talk about preaching to the heart, we do instinctively think application, but it's helpful to have engaged the heart throughout a sermon and that almost leads more naturally to application when you come to that.

This autumn, we're thrilled to be able to bring you BCUK's first podcast series. For years, we've been passionate about providing written resources and training courses. We thought now would be a good time to add the podcast to our range of materials designed to serve and equip the church. Our first series is entitled To the Heart and over five episodes we explore the nature of the heart and how we engage the heart as we serve one another well in the local church. We start in episode one with attending to the heart, looking at what the heart is and why it's important.

After that, we move through listening to the heart and speaking to the heart, how we engage the heart in conversation. Finally, in episodes four and five, we'll dig deeper in what it means to be people who are singing to the heart and preaching whether you're a church leader or a church member, it is our prayer that it will stir your heart and point you to Christ.
